What is the process for NFA items?
What are trusts?
A gun trust is a specialized trust designed to own and manage NFA-regulated firearms and accessories (such as suppressors and short-barreled rifles), helping owners meet federal and state requirements while providing more flexibility than individual ownership.
Here’s how the 3 common trust styles offered by Silencer Shop fit into that:
Gun Trust (Traditional NFA Gun Trust)
- A formal revocable trust designed to hold one or more NFA items.
- Multiple people (called trustees or responsible persons) can legally possess and use the NFA items listed in the trust without the primary trustee being present.
- It’s a broader, ongoing legal entity that can hold many items — useful for collectors or families.
Single Shot Trust
- A streamlined version of a gun trust created for a single NFA item at a time.
- It’s simpler and more affordable, tailored to registering and managing one suppressor or similar item.
- Trustees can usually be added later without extra paperwork.
Single Shot Unlimited Trust
- A one-time purchase that gives the owner unlimited Single Shot Trusts for life.
- Each time you buy a new NFA item, a trust is automatically created and applied to that item.
- Best for people planning multiple NFA purchases and who want automatic trust creation per item.
What are the mounting options for suppressors?
Direct Thread (Fixed Mount)
A direct thread suppressor screws directly onto the barrel using a specific thread pitch (such as 1/2×28 or 5/8×24). These are simple and secure, but they only fit barrels with the matching thread pitch and do not use a QD system.
Some direct-thread suppressors are fixed and cannot accept alternative mounts.
Example: The Gemtech Tracker is a 5/8×24 direct-thread suppressor. It is not QD and not HUB compatible, so it mounts only to barrels with the correct thread pitch.
Proprietary Quick-Detach (QD)
Proprietary QD suppressors attach to manufacturer-specific muzzle devices. These systems allow fast installation and removal but are limited to that company’s compatible mounts. In many cases, the mounting system is integral and cannot be swapped out.
Example: The Surefire SOCOM RC2 is a factory quick-detach suppressor that mounts only to Surefire SOCOM-compatible muzzle devices. Its QD mount is built in and cannot be removed or replaced.
HUB-Compatible Suppressors
HUB-compatible suppressors use an industry-standard rear thread pattern (commonly 1.375×24), allowing the use of different mounts from various manufacturers. Many ships have a direct-thread mount installed, but can be converted to other QD systems by swapping the rear mount.
Example: The Otter Creek Labs Polonium is HUB compatible. It includes a direct-thread mount but can be adapted with a HUB system—such as one from HUXWRX—to work with compatible muzzle devices.
In short, direct thread is fixed, and thread-specific, proprietary QD systems lock you into that manufacturer’s muzzle devices, and HUB-compatible suppressors provide the most flexibility by allowing interchangeable mounting systems.
Will a suppressor mount to my firearm?
A suppressor will only mount to your firearm if the barrel is threaded — or if a compatible threaded muzzle device is installed — and the thread pitch matches the suppressor or its mounting system.
Threaded Barrel Required
Most suppressors attach using barrel threads at the muzzle. If your firearm does not have a threaded barrel, you’ll need to have it professionally threaded or install a factory or aftermarket threaded barrel (common on many modern pistols and rifles).
Thread Pitch Must Match
Thread pitch refers to the diameter and thread spacing cut into the barrel. The suppressor (or its direct-thread adapter or muzzle device) must match that exact pitch.
Common examples:
- 1/2×28 – common for .22 LR, 9mm, and 5.56/.223
- 5/8×24 – common for .30 caliber rifles such as .308 and .300 BLK
- Metric options (e.g., M13.5×1 LH) are common on some European pistols
If the thread pitch does not match, the suppressor will not mount properly. Forcing mismatched threads can damage the barrel and may cause dangerous alignment issues.

What About QD or HUB Mounts?
Bottom line: Your firearm must have the correct threaded barrel (or compatible muzzle device), and the thread pitch must match the suppressor or its mounting adapter. Always verify your barrel’s thread specifications before purchasing.
